Locum Tenens Summer Work

Posted by admin on May 4th, 2012

When LocumLife published a story about the difficulty for physicians to be away from their families during the holidays, it got us thinking about the benefits of summer locum work. Many of you know about the benefits of being a locum tenens physician (traveling the world, excellent compensation, meeting new people, challenging work, the list goes on and on) but you may not know how to choose when to deploy on a locum project.

Locum jobs may be more attractive in the summer months for a variety of reasons. The first being that locum physicians may have the flexibility to be home during the holiday months which can be very important for some families. Secondly, work is usually more enjoyable during the summertime no matter what industry you are in. When locum physicians travel to new cities, it’s much more enjoyable to explore them when the weather is nice, especially in places with harsh winters.

Lastly, summer locum work may be more readily available. Many hospitals in areas that are highly visited during summer months (such as Florida or coastal/beach cities) may need to bolster staff when expecting their population to double. Also, full-time physicians are likely requesting time off during the summer and since patients don’t take vacations, hospitals need to remain properly staffed with physicians on vacation.

Locum Tenens in Demand as ACOs Strive to Maintain Full Staff Coverage

Posted by admin on May 1st, 2012

When it comes to Accountable Care Organizations, or ACOs, growth in Locum Tenens demand is expected because these health systems will be under more pressure to maintain full staff coverage. According to Harold D. Miller, executive director of the Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform in Pittsburgh, “Physicians who fill in gaps in schedules could provide a mechanism for ensuring that patients have prompt access to high-quality, cost-effective care and thereby achieve savings for an ACO.”

Since ACOs have become more prominent due to the health system reform, more responsibilities will be placed on Locum Tenens , which may result in better pay and bonus opportunities. If a Locum Physician can help an ACO meet, or exceed, its strict requirements and criteria, they may qualify for a bonus. Additionally, it’s speculated that some private insurers have ACO projects in the planning stages or already in operation, which could provide even more opportunities for Locum Physicians interested in ACO work.

According to Veterans Affairs, PTSD remains an enormous threat with combat troops still serving in Afghanistan, where an estimated six to 11 percent are currently suffering symptoms of PTSD. Statistics among Iraq War veterans are more disturbing, with between 12 to 20 percent of returning vets suffering PTSD-related anxieties. Non-governmental studies suggest that as many as one in every five military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan could suffer various forms of PTSD.

Smart Solutions For Primary Care Physician Shortage

Posted by admin on March 22nd, 2012

The ever-growing older population reaching Medicare coupled with the new Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) only intensifies the shortage of Primary Care Physicians. Many PCPs are not able to take on new clients, and if they do, the wait for new patients can be upwards of several months.

According to the American Association of Medical Colleges and the New York Times, projected growth in population versus available doctors is already 60% higher than in 2010. On average, it takes 8-10 years for an under supply of physicians to be corrected because physicians have to go through medical school and residency. The shortage of Primary Care Physicians is predicted to reach 46,000 full-time positions by 2025.

The short term solution to this problem is to fill the gaps with quality Locum Tenens who would otherwise consider retirement – or those who are simply attracted to the many options and benefits offered by Locum Tenens positions. This is the perfect opportunity for those candidates to find work at a place where they are truly needed and will be challenged each day. These are the candidates we are communicating with daily.

Considering a Locum Tenens Job? FOUR Important Questions to Ask Your Locum Tenens Agency

Posted by admin on August 17th, 2009

By Erica Ronchetti

How effective is your locum tenens agency? Before embarking on an exciting locum tenens career, there are a few key points to keep in mind, and your staffing agency should be able to provide you with answers to the following questions.

Housing and transportation should be one major area of discussion. Will housing be provided? How will you get to your job when you are working in a different state or city? A locum tenens agency should be able to provide answers or solutions to transportation and housing queries.

Salary. If your agency provides you with a locum tenens job, how will you be paid? Ensure that your pay rate and salary are provided to you in a written statement. In addition to salary, other aspects of your locum tenens physician job should be documented in writing, such as your locum job’s affect on your income taxes.

Another subject to ask about should be Insurance, specifically malpractice insurance.  It’s challenging to procure malpractice insurance when you only need it for a short term assignment, but a good locum tenens agency should be able to take care of this need and provide you with malpractice insurance, eliminating the need for you to find it for yourself.

State credentials should be another topic of discussion. What are your state credentials and which ones would you need? If you wish to travel to more than a few states, you will need licenses for each state you wish to practice in. This is a mostly bureaucratic process that a good locum tenens agency can take care of and save you time of doing yourself.

Find an agency that will answer all of these questions and provide you with the information and resources you need to begin (or continue) a career as a locum tenens physician. The Health Care Cycle of Need

Posted by admin on July 16th, 2009

By Christine Whitmarsh, RN, BSN

In researching topics like health care reform, the physician shortage and other topics hopefully of interest to Locum Tenens physician job holders, I have noticed a pattern amongst the medical specialty areas most in need of physicians. The areas where physicians, other primary care providers such as physician assistants and nurse practitioners, and Locum tenens physicians are needed the most, include general practice, pediatrics, emergency and geriatric medicine. The pattern is the cycle of life.

When we are born, we rely on doctors to bring us into this world, help our bodies adjust to a harsh, new living space and provide the necessary preparations so we can make it through to the next stage of life. Children need doctors to survive and thrive. Then, as we age, we rely on doctors to put us back together when we are broken, head off serious illness before it surfaces and ensure that we survive the middle part of life’s gauntlet. Finally, when we reach the home stretch we need – and quite frankly, have earned – doctors the most. We are not asking for eternal life, simply for a respectful and dignified quality of life until we reach the finish line.

All doctors practicing in all specialty areas serve an important role in health care. However, the ones who have a front row seat to the cycle of life – obstetricians, pediatricians, family medicine doctors, emergency department doctors and geriatric specialists – truly hold a special place in the circle of life. I can only hope that the powers that be who control compensation and reimbursement will see this and show these physicians the respect they so deserve.
